Washington Park in Sunnyvale, CA, has a long and colorful history. The land that would eventually become the park was originally purchased by James Gardner in 1859. In 1889, the land was sold to a developer who planned to construct a hotel, a livery stable, and cottages. Those plans were abandoned, and the land remained vacant until 1914 when the City of Sunnyvale purchased it to create a public park. The park first opened to the public in 1915 and was officially dedicated to the memory of George Washington in 1929.
